Obituary for Bohdan John ""Bud"" Balych

Bohdan John ""Bud"" Balych
Bohdan ‘Bud’ Balych - July 5, 1928-June 12, 2017

Bud was born July 5, 1928 to Michael and Natalia (Pylypchuk) in Wakaw, SK. The family soon moved to Morin Creek District where they homesteaded. At age 12, Bud was stricken with diphtheria from which he almost died – this was the first of many signs of his strong heart and wholesome spirit. As a young man, Bud had a fun and adventurous nature and exhibited many entrepreneurial skills – some of which were shared with his brother Alex. The Balych Brothers endeavors included a welding shop, a Massey Harris dealership and the start of Meadow Lake Air Services in 1951, which was the first commercial air service in the area to provide goods and services to remote northern communities. Flying was one of Bud’s passions which he continued for years as he loved the freedom and adventure it brought him. He went on to work for Larry’s Electric and Canadian Propane while he started his career in farming. In 1961, he married Eileen (Kwasniuk) and lived in Meadow Lake where they raised their daughters Laurel and Linda. Bud farmed in the Beaverdale area for over 40 years, many of them with his brother-in-law Orest. He loved the land, took joy in producing a good crop and was known to be innovative in his farming practices over the years. Bud served on several boards including the Sask Wheat Pool, the local seed cleaning plant and the Pioneer Lodge. His pastimes included curling, reading and going for walks around town. Bud loved a good conversation (even the occasional debate), enjoyed current affairs, worked hard and lived by the rule to always do your best. As his health failed, Bud spent his final 4 years in the Northland Pioneers Lodge where the residents and staff became his extended family and cared for him with much compassion and empathy. He is survived by his wife Eileen, daughters Laurel (John) and Linda (Gary) and granddaughters Tiesa and Julina. Bud was predeceased by his mother and father and his brothers Alex and Miron and is survived by his brother Mike and sister Anna (Yaremchuk). In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to the Northland Pioneers Lodge Association (515-3rd St. West Meadow Lake S9X 1L1) or a charity of your choice.
